you hear the major of major city call his own city strange. we'll be hearing from him and what city he can be talking about. >> we're finally out of the rain. forecast and all that. >>> we're start ing off with sad news this morning. three people are dead after a late night apartment fire in san jose. that fire began at 11:00 last night on bridge port court on the city's west side. this san jose fire department put out that fire then discovered the bodies of a man, woman and child. three other people including the officer who rescued one of the people who were injured were hospitalized with smoke inhalation. that fire displaced 56 people from the building. investigators are still looking into the cause. what you're looking at here are pictures from a fire yesterday in the mission district that left more than three dozen people homeless. this is in san francisco. it ripped through several apartment buildings. that fire broke out just after 9:30 yesterday morning on 23rd street, quickly spread to the near by buildings. firefighters worked for almost 2 the hours to contain it. 5 unit buil

in oakland, i'm da lin, cbs 5. >> thank you. >>> an 11-year-old daly city boy is dead after a police chase in pasadena. joe vazquez on the accident and neighbors who are devastated by the news. joe. >> reporter: the victim, allen, is 11-year-old kendrick ing here with his family on 89th street in daly city. they are presumed still to be in southern california dealing with the aftermath of this horrible crash. the family was in southern california in pasadena on christmas day visiting relatives. as they were riding in a minivan police were chasing a suspect in an suv through the streets. the chase went a mile and less than a minute then the suspect vehicle failed to stop for a red light and smashed into the minivan. two cousins were killed including an 11-year-old in daly city. three others were badly hurt. [ crying ] >> the dad and the boy always traveled together and see them together all the time. the father was always the one taking them to school... francisco. of course across the city a lot of these trees starting to come down and workers san francisco's recycling program want to make sure the trees don't end up in the landfill. instead they want to put them to good use, eventually turning them into renewable energy. this is the demonstration just about an hour ago here outside city hall as workers put a couple dozen trees in to the chipper. crews from the recycling contractor will begin collecting people's old trees starting next week. workers expect in the end to recycle more than 500-tons of trees. the manager said all of those wood chips can be burned. the heat turns the generator and creates power. when you put your old tree out on the curb for pick up make sure to take everything off it. >> if the lights and ornaments still on it we can't put it in the chipper, it'll contaminate the load, ruin the product. if it's not stripped of all those things that will go into the trash and to the landfill. we don't want that. >> reporter: if you live in san francisco, you can pit your tree out on the curb starting next wednesday, january
